Following high school, I enrolled at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Upon Completion of my Sophomore year, I was called to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peru and Chile, S.A. The two years of Spanish at Wa-Hi and classes at BYU enabled me to accomplish this mission. In September of 1964, I returned to Brigham Young University to complete my Bachelor's degree in Social/Psychology. During this period of time, I met my lovely wife, Neva Gardner, who was also enrolled at BYU. We were married in the spring of 1965. We have six children ranging in ages 43 to 31. Our children are a joy and blessing to us. They have completed their college educations, married successfully and are raising our 20 grandchildren. Between the reception of a BA degree and the pursuance of a Master's degree, I was employed as a juvenile counselor for the Umatilla County Oregon Juvenile Court System. I was assigned to cover high schools in Pendleton and milton-Freewater, Oregon. McLaughlin High School (Mac-Hi) was an interesting experience. I graduated from the University of Utah with a Master's degree in Social Work in 1969. An internship was completed at Kings View Hospital in Reedley, California. This allowed me to become licensed as a mental health clinician/counselor. In the forty years I have been employed as a professional social worker/administrator, we have lived in California, Washington and ultimately, Idaho. Over the years, I have been fortunate to secure faculty positions at various colleges/Universities. In the evenings, I have taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in Sociology and Pyschology. I recently retired as a program specialist for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. We live on a small acreage in Meridian, Idaho where we have a large garden, fruit trees and raise our own beef. Neva and I have traveled extensively in Mexico and some in the United States. We have enjoyed studying the Mayan and Inca cultures. In the year 2000, I was able to revisit Chile, S.A. with two of my sons who have also served as missionaries and are fluent in Spanish. Presently, I spend my time caring for my aged mother who is approaching 90. My hobbies include genealogical research, reading good books, spending time with the grandchildren and volunteering where needed at Church and in the Community. Neva is very talented, musically, and plays the organ at Church on Sundays. Life has been good to us and I thank the Lord, daily. |
