The following is from Larry Ackerman's funeral program:

            Lawrence Carl Ackerman
    October 30th, 1939 -- April 20th, 2007

Lawrence " Larry" Ackerman was born in Walla Walla on October 30th, 1939 & grew up in Walla Walla and Dayton Washington, where he excelled in many sports.

One year after enlisting in the army he married his high school sweetheart in 1960, the army meant being stationed in Germany during the Cold war. While living together with three generation German family, Larry guarded the Czech border while Rosalie worked for the Red Cross.

Honorably discharged, Larry moved his family, including newborn son, Erick to the Seattle area. Later came daughter Yvette and son Christofer.

Larry's lifelong passion was coaching, teaching and participation in sports. Whether it was swimming, water skiing, snow skiing, fishing, hiking, Little League, boys soccer, girls soccer, adult soccer (including Gateway and The Old Diehards), or golf. He supported his family-- coaching Erick's team The Bullets from 1970-1983, on a European tour and 4 State Championships. He supported Yvette in her dancing, acting and singing. He supported Cris' music career. His quiet time included classical music, studying German and the Bible.

Larry lived a full life and there was never a dull moment. As a caring person for his family, friends, co-worker and team players, he helped better their lives in many ways. He was a mentor to many. Above all, Larry was devoted to his lifelong love, friend and companion Rosalie.

Thank you Larry. You have touched all our lives and we will keep you in our hearts forever. Friday, April 27, 2007

Comment:
My dear wife, Petra, died of colon cancer last year.   This after five colonoscopies failed to detect anything – (Dear friends, if you have any family history of this, get a CT Scan).

We sold our family business three years ago at a very good time – and got paid. I had worked at Adams Tractor Company in high school and operated the company for the last 25 years. During this time, I remained in the Air Force Reserve working as a Combat Crew Commander and Launch Officer on the Titan II ICBM’s, and later, as a liaison officer for the Air Force Academy – retiring as a Lt. Colonel.

Also, I became a director of First Federal Savings and Loan (now Banner Bank) 25 years ago and continue that activity.

Three of the children, their families, and my Dad (now 94) live in town, so between them (and golf-(God help me)), I stay busy.

Spouse:  DanaChildren:  2 SonsGrandchildren:  2 GranddaughtersActivities/Hobbies:  Travel, Music, BridgeAfter graduating from the University of Washington and serving my active duty time in the Army Reserves, I met and married my wife Dana in 1966. We have two sons, Bob and Brent, who both graduated from the UW and live in the Seattle area. They each have a little girl giving Dana and I two darling and much loved granddaughters.

My career consisted of 35years in the employee benefits field. This included: (1) 6 years at King County Medical Blue Shield in Seattle where I was Director of Underwriting and (2) 29 years as a Health and Welfare Benefits Consultant to large employers in the Western and Southern United States. During my years as a consultant, I was a Principal in the Seattle and Memphis Offices of William M. Mercer, the world’s largest employee benefits consulting firm, and later, became a Partner in the Charlotte, N.C. office of Arthur Andersen. While at Mercer, I developed a financial analysis system, which was adopted nationally by the firm. I spent a considerable amount of time implementing the system in various Mercer offices across the country. I was subsequently recruited by Arthur Andersen to build and manage a health and welfare consulting practice in the Southern US, where I remained until my retirement in 2001.

We built a retirement home in Brevard, N.C., which is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Ashville. We lived there for three years before family matters and the birth of our first grandchild beckoned us back to the Seattle area. During our twenty years in the South with stops in Richmond, Memphis, Charlotte and Atlanta we made many wonderful friends. Dana and I became very active as volunteers and board members with the arts communities (Symphony and Opera) in Memphis, Charlotte and Atlanta.

We now reside in the city of Sammamish and enjoy renewing old friendships, spending time with our families, traveling, playing bridge and generally celebrating life.

Comment:
My first husband, Bob Alliston, died in 1979, and I remarried in 1981 to another Boeing engineer, Pete Beaupain.  Between us we have 6 children and 6 grandchildren including two adopted from Russia.  Pete flunked his first retirement and has been back working as a contract engineer for the last 4 years.  He was working on the Dreamliner but moved over to another program working on planes that actually get off the ground.  I worked for a number of years managing a media library for the Puget Sound ESD (those of you in education will know what that is).  Our library closed down not long after the demise of the old 16mm film and invention of DVD.  My last employment was at Green River Community College as a reference librarian, a job I really loved.  We had kids from all over the world and I was never bored.  For the last month I've been nurse and chauffer for my husband during his recovery from double knee replacement.  Yes, both knees at once.  But he's so obssessive about work he clocked 30 hours from home in the first two weeks after surgery!  My current activity centers around my church and my gym where I'm working out 5 days a week trying to keep arthritis and old age from winning.  Hope you all have a good time together.  I've really enjoyed reading all your bios.

After high school I married my high school sweetheart, Bob Ambs, and moved to San Diego, California as Bob was in the Navy. We had a son. After Bob was discharged from the Navy we moved back to Walla Walla. I had two more children. Bob wanted me to be a stay at home mom so I didn’t work for many years. In the meantime, I made new friends and I joined a genealogy club that was just getting started. I searched for my husband’s family and my parent’s families. It was a lot of fun. Then I took up oil painting and did that for several years. I wasn’t able to take classes but I had somewhat of a natural talent. There were several real good painters in my family. I sold three of my paintings, which made me feel good, as I didn’t know what I was doing. I did end up going to work as a nurse’s aide here in Walla Walla. Then my husband transferred to Seattle, so my family and I followed him. We moved to Mountlake Terrace in 1974. I went to work as a nurse’s aide in Lynnwood for a couple of years. Then I got pregnant again and didn’t work for a while. A few months later I decided to go back to work in the laundry at a nursing home. My other kids were old enough to take care of their new sister while I worked on afternoon and evening shifts. I made more new friends up there and still keep in touch with them. Friends are important to me. My husband died of a massive heart attack in 1980. We were married 22 years. Only two of my younger children and I moved back to Walla Walla. I then stayed home with them. Three years later I met someone and married but it only lasted for three years and ended in divorce. I did in-home care for five years and then I worked in the laundry at nursing homes. I quit at 62. I manage to keep busy with my family, friends, church, and other fun activities. I also have a special friend I have been dating for a few months.

My hobbies are crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, plays and concerts.
