Polly Struthers (Landt)

Comment:

Deceased

Polly was born January 15, 1941 and passed away March 21, 1995 in Marion County, OR

Polly attended WSU until her marriage to Bob Miller in Aug. 1963. The couple resided in Berlin, Germany for several years while Bob was serving in the US Army. This was the time of the building of the Berlin Wall; it was an immensely depressing environment, with many bombed out buildings left from WWII. While there, Elaine and Steve Knapp visited Polly in '65, meeting in Venice - they had a wonderful time traveling together into Greece and Turkey.

Polly was also married to Allen Struthers - they lived near Portland, Oregon, where Allen was involved in the timber industry. During this time, Polly and Allen had great fun restoring antique furniture found in remote lumber towns, designing a beautiful country house, and training horses. Polly was a gifted horsewoman with her horses winning in halter classes as well as in Standard Bred classes at the San Francisco Cow Palace.

Polly was friendly, enthusiastic and talented in whatever endeavor she put her mind to, whether it was to organize an office, decorate a home, planting gardens, or sharing her love of animals.

She died tragically in March of 1995.

Lynn Suckow (Davison)

Marital status: Divorced
Children: 4
Occupation: RETIRED!!
Comment:

In the beginning: I was born and raised in Walla Walla, WA, graduating from Wa-Hi in 1959.  For a year I went to nurse's training in Spokane but quit to get married to Fred Suckow a draftsman working for GE in Richland. We lived in Richland 3 years where we had 2 of our 4 children (first a boy, then a girl).  GE left Richland and we moved to San Jose, CA so he could continue working for them.  The last two children were born in San Jose (eight years and two days between the eldest and the youngest).

Hobbies: We enjoyed camping along with rock hounding, using our one-ton Dodge van to pull our tent trailer into many beautiful areas of California and Oregon.  When my youngest was in kindergarten I began working part-time at a grade school's media center (not where my kids attended).  Some night classes in art helped me stay connected with art, and the long gardening season in California was a dream, except for the slugs and snails!! I had taken pictures since grade school beginning with a Kodak Brownie. We bought an SLR camera and took pictures and slides of the kids and our trips.

Note: (When I visit my son and his wife in Sacramento now, if we have time we visit my favorite place in the world, Point Lobos, or drive up into the Sierras.)

Personal: After 22 years of marriage my husband was attacked by a mid-life crisis and a need for change, and divorced me.  He has since had two wives, the most recent one having lasted over 18 years. I had a close call, but have remained single.

California Work History: After a few years of working at the school, I began my 20 year saga of working in the nuclear industry (along with my newly divorced status) in San Jose, first as a secretary, then as an engineering assistant, and last a document control clerk in Scotts Valley. I enjoyed most of my co-workers and sometimes the work. At least it kept my mind stimulated and paid the bills.

A Bit of Travel History: While working in nuclear engineering I got to travel to Mississippi for a Safety Relief Valve test at Grand Gulf. My first time past Colorado! Spring of 1996 I took my first trip off the mainland, to Hawaii. My eldest daughter’s husband had grown up there, so off we went with my 2 year old grandson. Woo Hoo! I loved it except for the heat and humidity.

Approaching the finale: I lived in San Jose for 35 years, commuted 45 minutes each way to Scotts Valley for three years at my last job there, and had my heart attacked by a virus (scary, but I’ve fully recovered from that). I moved back to Walla Walla in 2001 where my two sisters and brother and Aunt Dorothy lived.  My eldest sister has since moved to St George, Utah and Aunt Dorothy has died.  After taking six month break from work I hired on as secretary for Pioneer UMC for six years. Very different from working in the nuclear industry.

My children: I’m the proud mother of four children (47, 45-1/2, 43, and 39) who put themselves through college. Probably because I warned them to get an education so they could get a job doing what they wanted to do, AND support me in my old age =o]

They are scattered around. In birth order beginning with the eldest: my son and his wife (Will & Marjorie) live in Sacramento where he is an independent illustrator and his wife (who grew up in Madras, India) works for the state in education, number crunching; my eldest daughter, her husband and two sons (Jess, Chris, Morgan & Finn) live just west of Montreal, Canada where she is homeschooling the boys and her husband designs computer games; my middle daughter lives in LA with her long time sweetheart (Barbara & Frank) – Barbara makes costumes for TV shows and Disney productions and Frank (born in Taiwan) directs movies and ads (his movie “American Fusion” is now available on Netflix); and my youngest daughter and her fiance’ (Ann & Russ) moved July 2008 to Portland, Oregon which they love. Both worked on many TV productions. Ann started out working on the MTV Behind the Music series and most recently was involved with TLC’s “Little People, Big World” reality TV show.

Travel last year and this: In 2008 I visited the Naches wildlife refuge, Palouse Falls, Hood River area, Palouse Hills and Colfax, Northwest Trek near Eatonville, Glacier National Park, Ashland, Crater Lake, Silver Falls State Park, and the fall foliage along the Columbia River Gorge, mostly on the Washington side –starting the return trip at Trout Lake.  The big trip in 2009was to St. Lazare, Canada to see my eldest daughter and her family. Too many pictures taken along the way.

Wrap-up: I am now fully retired (subbing for the church secretary once in a while), roaming with my camera gear, going on trips here and there, and volunteering at the Pantry Shelf and the Christian Aid Center. The Quest classes for older adults here at the CC are wonderful—I’ve taken a variety of them including weekend bus trips with Whitman geology teacher Dr. Bob Carson.

You can check out some of my pictures on flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/walla2chick/ Thanks to being a member of the Blue Mt Photo Club, my framed photos are often on display at the coffee shop in Hastings and at Suncatchers in Milton-Freewater. Suncatcher’s also has my photo greeting cards and Milton-Freewater Frog postcards. The past two years I’ve had three of my photos accepted into the annual Carnegie juried show.

Final Answer: Retired life is good!
