Janet Risser (Long)

Comment:
Deceased 1942 - 2009 Janet died on June 4, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. She was born to Dr. and Mrs. W.E. Long in Boston, where her father was completing his medical education. After leaving Boston, the family moved to several military posts, following her father's military service assignment. In 1946, the family took residence in Dallas while her father completed training in his specialty. The family moved to Walla Walla in 1951. Janet attended local grade schools and graduated from Wa-Hi. She then received her undergraduate degree at Stanford University, and went on to complete a master's degree at UC Berkeley, and the Sorbonne, Paris, France, and earned an MBA at Standord Graduate School of Business. Her career in the business world was divided almost equally between working in corporate cash management at Bank of America, San Francisco, and as a financial systems designer at VISA, International. When she retired in 2001, she returned to take up residence in Walla Walla. She loved Walla Walla's lovely natural setting, its historic homes, and beautiful parks and trees. She enjoyed river rafting, national and foreign travel, playing duplicate bridge, bird-watching, gardening and reading. She is survived by two daughters, Jessica of Providence, Rhode Island and Jill, of San Francisco. Other surviving family members include two sisters, Roberta Long Wilson of Walla Walla and Judith Long Rosow of Boston; a brother, William E. Long of Anchorage and her father, Dr. W.E. Long of Walla Walla. A private service is planned. (from U-B obit dated 7 June, 2009) |

Spouse: Theodore Activities/Hobbies: Needlepoint, Reading I entered the Air Force in 1960. I met and married my husband, Theodore, in 1961. He remained in the Air Force for 21 years. During this time I worked as a secretary in various places. When he retired, we moved to Mesa, Arizona. He went to work as an aircraft maintenance man/inspector and I began work at our local PBS TV Station inputting data into the computer. After my second heart attack and a triple by pass, I retired and took up needlepointing as a hobby. He is still working and we are both fairly active in our church. |

Spouse: Bill Children: 2 Sons and 1 Daughter Grandchildren: 2 Grandsons & 2 Granddaughters Activities/Hobbies: Cowboy Action Shooting, Woodcarving, Crocheting, Traveling, Gardening, Reading, Rugtwining During our senior year I went on a blind date and the following year ended up making it permanent. We will be celebrating our 50th anniversary this Nov. 14. We built our home across the street from Bill’s parents in Milton-Freewater and we are still living there today. In 1961 we started our family with twin girls; they were very small and only one survived. Two years later we added a boy and eight years more added another boy. During this time I was pretty much a stay at home mom until our family was all in school and then started working outside of home. I was a teacher’s assistant for 15 years in the resource room in a Junior High. Bill was the Electric Superintendant and Fire Chief for the city. We have been retired from our jobs now for the last 12 years and loving it. We have a three acre cherry orchard that we farm, three rental houses we maintain, plus our home and our church affiliations, so we have plenty to keep us busy. We have two granddaughters and two grandsons, which have been fun to watch grow up. Over the years I have had many different hobbies; woodcarving, crocheting, reading, gardening, traveling and rugtwining, and enjoyed them all. But about five years ago we discovered Cowboy Action Shooting and are both enjoying it. We have traveled the length and breadth of the Northwest to different shoots and spend almost three months in the winter in Arizona, including going to the national shoot three different years now. It’s a great sport to keep you both active and alert and a good excuse to travel, meet neat people who are all enjoying doing the same thing. We feel so blessed to have had so many wonderful years together and have had good health to enjoy life.
