Donald Miller, Oct. 30, 1941 - Nov. 14, 2009

YAKIMA - Former Walla Walla resident Donald Eugene Miller, 68, died Nov. 14, 2009, in Yakima, after battling cancer.

The memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at West Valley Four Square Church, 5802 Summitview Ave., Yakima.  Arrangements are by the Neptune Society.

Don was born in Walla Walla on Oct. 30, 1941, to Floyd and Elma Miller.  He grew up in Walla Walla.  He joined the Army in 1963 and served until 1965.  He then moved to Yakima where he worked and attended Yakima Valley Community College.  He met his wife, Gerri, while in school and they married in 1975.  He adopted her two daughters and the couple had another daughter and adopted a fourth.

Don worked as a registered nurse in Yakima.  In 1986 the family moved to Arizona, where he and his wife attended Grand Canyon University, earning their Bachelor of Nursing degrees in 1989.  The family then moved back to Yakima and continued serving there.  He was a nurse for 34 years.

He enjoyed being a father and also liked cooking, cleaning, sewing dresses and fixing his daughters' hair.  The word "can't" was not in his vocabulary.  As a nurse, he was known for his compassion for his patients.

Don is survived by his wife, at the home; four daughters, Tammy McMahon of Spokane, and Rebecca Festa, Sarah Morris and Jolene Maygra, all of Yakima; a brother, Ronald Miller of Walla Walla; and three grandchildren.

After graduating from Wa Hi, I attended Western Washington State College.  I met my husband, Bill, there, got married, and worked for a while in Seattle where we had our first daughter. We went back to college at Central where we had our second daughter and each graduated in education. We lived near Wapato for a couple of years where my husband taught and I student taught and commuted to finish my degree.

We moved to Walla Walla in 1966 and have been here since, having two more children, (sons) and raising our family. Bill and I both taught in elementary schools here. We actually teamed for four years while at Blue Ridge. I taught kindergarten, first, third, fourth, and fifth grades over the years. I started teaching at Washington Elementary, then went to Jefferson, Blue Ridge and finished at Sharpstein. That was a lot of fun since I had gone to school there. I received my MA Ed. from WSU in 1979.  My favorite time during my teaching career was when we first opened Blue Ridge and integrated all subjects through the arts. We had wonderful, whole school units with music and drama performances and visual art projects to tie concepts together and make them meaningful. It was a great time.

We have four children. Lisa is an elementary library media specialist at Vista Elementary in Kennewick. She is married to Ben Hill, and they live in Benton City where he is a teacher, coaches football and is head wrestling coach. Leslie is a middle school counselor at Desert Hills in Kennewick and is married to Fred Sievers, who works in equipment and supply procurement at CBC in Pasco. They have a daughter, Mikayla, age 13, and a son, Gavin, who is 9, and live in Richland. Eric is a computer specialist and systems analyst with Bank of America in Seattle. He is married to Kristin who is a stay- at-home mom and school volunteer. They have Madeline who is 10 and Danielle, who is 8, and live in Issaquah.   Kyle is the high school principal at Burbank, WA where he and his family live. He is married to Raynee, a social worker who works with juveniles. They are parents to Konnor, 14, and Kendal, 11. We have great times with all of our family.

After our children were through school and on their own, we began to travel more. We have been to Mexico and Hawaii numerous times. We have driven to the east coast twice and traveled home via southern states. We have also driven through New England. Our first trip abroad was to Turkey. We have also gone to Spain, Portugal, and the British Isles. We took our first cruise last April, going to Grand Cayman Island, Cartagena, Colombia, through the Panama Canal, and several places in Mexico. It was an extremely interesting trip.

My hobbies, in addition to traveling, are sewing, quilting, knitting, and spending time with our grandkids. I go to a lot of kid movies. I have made all of my grandchildren’s baptismal gowns using heirloom sewing techniques. I enjoy making quilts and quilted decorative items for my home and my children. I also enjoy making decorative clothing using a variety of embroidery, quilting, and knitting techniques.

In 2006 I was diagnosed with three auto-immune diseases: Hashimoto's disease, Celiac disease (which was life changing – no more wheat!!!,) and polymyositis. I have been on high doses of medications that have resulted in my having a hip replacement in January of this year. I am looking forward to being able to go for long walks again.  We also hope to do some more traveling since I will be more able to get around and enjoy trips.

I wish everyone good health and happiness in the next fifty years!

Children:  1 Son and 1 Daughter

Grandchildren:  1 Grandson

Following graduation from Wa-Hi, I attended Washington State University where I graduated with A BA in Business and Secretarial Studies, as well as serving as President of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

I married Moe Miller (class of 1957) in the fall of 1963. Moe, after graduating from Central Washington, joined the management team of J. C. Penney. He retired after 32 years in 1999. I also “retired” two years ago, after a 25-year career with a real estate development and property management firm, where I served as administrator to the President. However, I guess I didn’t retire completely cause I am now considered a consultant for a non-profit corporation, specializing in preserving low-income housing. I can come and go as I please and no more minutia – perfect set up.

We are so lucky to have both children and family right here in Boise. Our daughter, 42, is a senior compliance auditor for Idaho Housing and Finance Association and teaches Canadian Studies at Boise State University Our son, 40, is married with our new one-year old grandson and is a stockbroker with RBC Wealth Management. The joy of grand parenting….need I say more.

Moe and I now enjoyed traveling which included our 45th wedding anniversary trip “cruising” down the Danube River taking in the sites and sounds of Germany and Austria. Our families are very involved in Boise State athletics, as well as Boise High School (where our children graduated) because Moe is a volunteer special team’s coach (kickers). Family, friends, gardening and lots of “wish I had time for” fills in the gaps.

Ra Ra for Wa-Hi-----------looking forward to our 50th – how time does fly!!!!

I went to WSU and graduated in Elementary Education. I taught second grade in Parkrose, R (suburb of Portland) for three years and then moved to Seattle to teach in Bellevue for a year. I met my husband, Dave, and we were married in 1967. After living in Seattle for a few months he got a new job, which moved us to Portland, where we lived for nine years. Both of our daughters, Melanie and Allison, were born in Portland.

In 1976 we moved to Keizer, OR (next to Salem) where we have lived ever since. During the girls’ school years I was very involved in volunteer activities in their schools. I also volunteered at the YWCA and served on the board of the Salem YW for six years. Presently I volunteer at the Keizer library.

In 1989 I went to work part time as a gift buyer and salesperson for a local furniture store. It was a fun job as I got to travel to Seattle and Portland for gift shows.

In 1992 after my husband retired as the Administrator of DMV for Oregon we bought an RV and traveled in the U.S. and Canada. The only state we missed was North Dakota. There are so many beautiful places in our country. WE spent a few winters in the southwest to get out of the Oregon rain.

We have two grandchildren; Grand 14 and Lauren 11. We love spending time with them and taking them to the beach every summer. Both our daughters and families live close so we are blessed to see them often.

In the last few years we have enjoyed several cruises to Alaska, Mexico, Panama and the Caribbean. Two years ago we spent a month in Italy exploring the hill towns of Tuscany. A favorite trip last fall was a two week river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam.
