Marital status: Married
Children: 2
Occupation: Retired Pediatric Radiologist
Comment:
After leaving Walla Walla in1959 I attended the University of Washington for college and medical school graduating in 1966. After a year of medical internship at Yale-New Haven Medical Center in New Haven, Connecticut, I returned to Seattle in July, 1967 for a radiology residency finishing in June, 1970. I was fortunate to avoid a military tour of Viet Nam by spending two years as a radiologist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland for the US Public Health Service. A grant from the University of Washington enabled my wife and young family to spend a year in the radiology department at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1972-1973.

When it was time for a real job, I chose the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, for its new rapidly expanding radiology department in an area of great recreational opportunity. In 1978 I was asked to join the staff at Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, and practiced as a pediatric radiologist specializing in heart disease of infants and children until my retirement in July, 2003. In the past six years I have enjoyed teaching pediatric radiology in China at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, and in Guatemala, and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, as well as throughout the United States. Volunteer activities also have included Board Chairman of Repertory Dance Theater, and Planned Parenthood of Utah.

I met my wife, Helene, on a blind date at the University of Washington and married in September, 1963. We have two married sons, Jay, 39, living in Brooklyn, New York, a baseball writer, and Bryan, 37, living in Seattle, Washington, an investment banker. No grandchildren yet, just “granddogs”, but hopefully soon. We have two wonderful daughters-in-law, each one very competent in business.

Salt Lake City, Utah, and adjacent states have provided a wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities, and I have continued to enjoy golf and skiing since leaving Seattle. Other outdoor interests include fishing, backpacking, predominantly in Wyoming, gardening, bonsai and travel in Europe and the United States. I have greatly enjoyed returning to Walla Walla in past years to visit my parents, now both deceased, and now with family and friends to visit the many wineries in the area.

After graduation I worked at Sporleders Mens Store in Walla Walla for thirteen years.  I was a member of the Walla Walla Jaycees and held all the local offices.

Then I was hired by Lantor's Clothing Store in Kennewick, WA where I worked one year.  After that I went into real estate for eight years.  I had a successful real estate practice and was the top salesman for the Tri City area.  While in Kennewick I was a member of the Rotary Club, Elks Club and held offices in both of those organizations and was on the Board of Directors of Columbia Industries.

From 1982 to 1992 my wife and I owned Tempco Heating and Air Conditioning in Kennewick, WA.  In 1992 we sold our business and retired and returned to Walla Walla where we have lived since.

Nancy Jewell (Niemi)

Marital status: Married
Children: 2
Occupation: Retired
Comment: Departed Walla Walla fall, 1959 for Ellensburg, WA and Central Washington State (now University).  Graduated 1963 with degree in Elementary Education with specialties in Reading and Art Education.

Married Michael D. (Mike) Jewell (also a CWS grad), December, 1963 and celebrated our 50th anniversary with family and friends in Las Vegas, December 27-28, 2013.

Two daughters: Aili (Seattle) and Dana (Peoria, AZ) and her husband, Brian and a very special granddaughter, age 10 yrs.

Taught as a Reading Specialist in both Pasco, WA and Federal Way, WA until the teachers' unions began dictating what teachers were and were not to do.   Nancy left the teaching profession at that time to raise both daughters. Husband, Mike, was with GECC during those years transferring him (us) to various locations in the western US. (Seattle/Bellevue, WA, Everett, WA, Tri-Cities, WA, Tacoma, WA, Portland, OR, Pasadena, CA, and back to Seattle/Redmond, WA).

When we relocated to Spokane, WA area in mid-70s we built a home and horse facility in Liberty Lake, WA.   While Mike continued in the lease/finance industry, he was busy collecting, rebuilding and showing muscle cars (GTOs specifically). Nancy continued her interest in Morgan horses which was a childhood dream growing up in Walla Walla and knowing two great foundation Morgan breeders in that area.  Relationships with those two Morgan mentors were built during her years riding with the Walla Walla Wagonettes on her part Morgan mare.  Over the years we bred, raised, and showed many registered Morgan horses beginning in the late 1960s

Managing this facility was almost a full time job, but Nancy worked as Administrative Assistant to a financial consultant for 15 years.  When daughter, Dana, graduated with degree in Marketing and Merchandising, and sharing interest in the equine show ring, we partnered to open a successful tack and equestrian business in the Spokane Valley, WA.  Almost 14 years later, when Dana's husband took a job in his field in Arizona, the store was sold.  After retiring from our large equine facility in Liberty Lake, WA, we downsized to a smaller farm in nearby Post Falls, ID.  Nancy, as owner of Jazztime Morgan Farm, received the national award from American Morgan Horse Association; Hall of Fame 2009. Cold and snowy winters began to wear on us.  After Dana and Brian's move to warm, sunny Arizona and many visits to their home, we decided to downsize once more.  We were fortunate to find a two acre property in Desert Hills, AZ and April, 2010 found us Arizona residents.  We have retained a core group of six show Morgan horses here in Arizona.

Another great interest for us has been the fabulous canine, the Standard Schnauzer.  Our first, over 15 years ago, was the beginning of our breeding program specializing in the rare black color.  Having shown several to AKC Champion and/or Grand Champion titles, we have imported a lovely black pup from Poland and we hope he will bring home numerous titles in the show ring and expand our breeding program in the US.  Having received AKC Breeder of Merit status in 2011 was a big honor for Jazztime Standard Schnauzers.

We continue to stay busy developing this property, also as support to Dana and her family, with the horses, and dogs. Mike continues to work part-time as a consultant in the lease and finance business which he loves.

Here in Desert Hills, our home includes a guest house which is available to family and friends vacationing in Arizona.  You can find me on FaceBook if you wish to get in touch.

8 Fishermen missing from Ilwaco charter

ILWACO, Wash. (AP) -- Eight persons are missing today after a charter fishing boat sank while under tow late Monday in rough seas at the mouth of the Columbia River, the Coast Guard says.

A spokesman for the NTSB in Washington, D.C. said today his agency will investigate the accident because a Coast Guard vessel was involved.

Two passengers from Bellevue, Wash., were rescued from the 41-foot charter, the Pearl Sea.  Ten persons were aboard the disabled craft as it was being towed by a Coast Guard vessel.

The missing were listed as Raymond Jewett, 36, Roy Jewett, 15, both of Bellvue; Harry Jewett, 70, Spokane; Bernice Winegar, 50, Ken Winegar, and Abron Nordgren, 58, all of Wood Cross City, Utah; the boat's skipper, Bill Cutting, and a Bellvue woman whose name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

A search involving the Coast Guard cutter Yocona and several smaller vessels continued through most of the night in heavy seas, and resumed at dawn today.

Early reports were that both the fishing boat and Coast Guard tow boat had capsized, with the Coast Guard vessel righting itself.  But a spokesman at the Coast Guard station at Astoria said today that neither boat actually overturned.  He said the charter wallowed about 90 degrees and sank while undertow.  The spokesman at Astoria said the charter boat may have been taking on water.  He doubted the ocean conditions were the sole cause of the accident because swells were reported as mostly five to six feet and no larger than eight feet, with no breakers on the bar that separates the ocean from the river.  Winds were reported at 20-25 knots.

Saw a sign recently: "Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes."  :)   How did 50 years go be so fast????
Brief history of Donna: Graduated from University of Washington in Drama. Worked as an actress at Seattle Repertory Theatre. Worked my way around the world on Norwegian merchant ships. Settled in Tucson, Arizona where I worked as a civilian in law enforcement, and began a spiritual quest. Worked for a yoga organization in Los Angeles. Came to Walla Walla for a two week visit in 1987, and stayed.
In the 1990s I took up watercolor painting and attended wonderful art workshops in Greece, New Mexico and Walla Walla. I also had inspiring meditation retreats in Switzerland and Southern California and visited the holy sites in Greece.
In 2001 I bought a home for my 60th birthday present. I've been digging and planting in the rocks ever since. I've become much more aware of environmental issues, and seemingly small steps one can take to help our beautiful planet, our earthly home. Served on the Walla Walla Urban Forestry Advisory Commission for four years.
In March 2008, I retired from the Walla Walla VA as Accounting Technician. Thanks to "modern medicine" I continue enjoying my friends, critters, plants and gardens, reading, art, projects about the house and yard, walking the dog, working out at Curves for Women, taking Quest classes at WWCC, attending theater, movies, and Blue Mountain Audubon and Native Plant Society meetings.

Spouse:  Dale

Children:  4 Sons and 2 Daughters

Grandchildren:  9 Grandsons and 3 Granddaughters

Great Grandchildren:  1 Great Grandson and 2 Great Granddaughters

Activities/Hobbies:  Spending time w/children & grandchildren, cooking, reading, fishing, watching wildlife, birds, clouds, sunrise & sunsets.

Happily married to the kindest, most loving man ever born. We are living our retirement dream in a log cabin/home in the mountains at the end of a road with few or no full time neighbors. The deer, quail, raccoons and all kinds of birds keep us entertained and amused. We have a beautiful pond off our deck in the front of our house and a view of the Elkhorn Mountains. In the summer we work in the yard, fish, pick berries and morel mushrooms and take long rides in the mountains. In the winter Dale spends many days plowing snow so we can get out to the main road. As I write this I am watching him plow us out of the newest blanket that has hit us this winter. It is beautiful for the person who can stay in and keep warm!! Thank God we both love to read, play cribbage and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company; otherwise the days/nights could be loooong.

Our children and grandchildren are a special blessing and our pride and joy. We spend much of our time with them and are very happy that they would rather spend time with us than with others. We have large gatherings year round with family and friends, playing games, cooking great food and sharing great stories. Dale and I laugh because our children argue over who will be blessed with us when we are too senile to take care of ourselves.

We have five children – three sons and two daughters. We lost our wonderful, beloved son, Larry, in 2006. Our grandchildren are all exceptional students; some gifted musically and others in sports. I take little or no credit for their accomplishments; however I do claim bragging rights. They have wonderful parents. I have tried to teach them how to cook, do the Wa-Hi shuffle, and other dances from the 50’s. They get a real laugh hearing stories and looking at pictures of all of us from that period of time. They know about dragging Main St., the G&P, pedal pushers, starched crinolines, white bucks, Shuffle Shop, The Spud Nut Shop, driving in Sharon Weather’s convertible, the great spaghetti feed at Sharon’s, going to Ann’s to watch American Bandstand, guys in levis and white T shirts, duck tails and crew cuts, cool cars, formals, the drive in, marching bands, Sponsors, and riding the bus to games, great teachers/coaches, etc. What a wonderful time it was. As I get older those memories warm my heart and I hope some touch yours also.

As much as I would love to see all of you in August, our family has one of its annual gatherings then. I will think of you with great fondness and know you will have a wonderful time reminiscing and getting acquainted again.
