Lake Claims Wa-Hi Youth

Dan Ingstad, a 17-year-old honor student at Walla Walla High School, drowned Sunday afternoon in Horshoe Lake, in spite of his companion's desperate attempts to save his life.  He had been on a camping vacation.  Horshoe Lake is off the west fork of the Wallowa River, above Wallowa Lake.

Dan was born May 6, 1941, in Big Fork, Minn.  He and his family came to Walla Walla from Richland.

Like the rest of his family, Dan was musical.  Russell Larsen, director of music at Wa-Hi, Monday said Dan was one of his outstanding students.  He was a member of the school band and orchestra, playing the bass trombone, trumpet and cornet, and he played the bass trombone in the Walla Walla Symphony Orchestra.

Daniel A. Ingstad -- August 10 at Wallowa, Oregon.  Dan, 17, lost his life while swimming in a Wallowa region lake in Northeast Oregon Sunday.  He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ingstad; three sisters, Elizabeth Ann, Rhoda and Sarah Ingstad, all at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Fallness of Richland.  Born May 8, 1941 in Big Fork, Minn.  Member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and the Air Explorers' Patrol of the Boy Scouts, and the Walla Walla Symphony Orchestra.
