Wow! Fifty years and counting on the next fifty.   I went away to college after Wa Hi and graduated from Washington State University in 1965 with a couple of journeys mixed in. One journey was time spent in Hawaii (with my classmate Ilene Arnoldt (Woodd). After graduating from college I moved to the San Francisco Bay area in California and went to work at Stanford University as a Hospital Administrator. I had a fantastic career there and had the great fortune to meet the love of my life (Peter Gottschling). Peter and I share not only the love and adventure of life itself but many, many other things that bring great joy to us. Bird watching, camping, travelling, wining and dining, cycling and hiking are always high on our list. We figured out we could keep busy 24 hours/day by bird watching during the day and then watching stars at night so we invested in some nifty telescopes for night viewing.  Our bird watching has taken us to some great places - Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, New Guinea, Venezuela,  and next year we're off to Argentina. I spent a month in England riding my bike in the country side and staying in hostels. Was fantastic. All through our trips we take pictures (me video, Peter still) and I record the birds and mammals as they sing and call. When home I spend a lot of time with my editing programs to put all of this into DVD's (now Blue Ray) for our viewing pleasure and for torturing our friends. But, they can usually sit through the whole thing.

After many, many years in California Peter was transferred to Houston, Texas. I landed another great hospital job at MD Anderson Cancer Center then the University of Texas Medical Center. We spent nearly fourteen years in Texas then found ourselves in Columbus, Ohio. Fortunately Peter's job kept us in places that had medical centers so I could continue my career - this time at THE Ohio State University Medical Center. After five years there we were ready to move again - but this time I said "one more move and I don't think I will be seeking work again". So, on to Montreal, Canada and then Toronto, Canada where I began my "life of leisure". I had absolutely NO trouble transitioning into NOT working and found I filled up every single hour of every day.  Peter then got an offer he (we) could not refuse to return to Texas - this time the Dallas/Fort Worth area (north Texas). We love Texas, had always wanted and intended to return and besides had purchased some property in West Texas (Fort Davis) that we missed visiting as frequently as we wished - where the skies are truly dark at night. So here we are - back in the best state there is. Peter still works - I still find I don't have time enough in a day to do all I want. I've been extremely active in environmental organizations (the Houston Audubon Society where I was President for two years and the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory where I remain very active on the Advisory Board). We continue to ride our bikes, bird watch, travel, camp (now in a small trailer), and enjoy all things outdoors. I have a tradition of riding my bike each year around my birthday in the miles I am old. Obviously this is getting harder and harder to do but I do it - although it now needs to be done in two days rather than one day.  This year those miles will be ridden while we are 'camping' at of our place in Fort Davis where there are hills to add a special challenge!!!  A friend of mine in California who is of similar age puts me to shame by riding those miles in one day still. Oh well. Something to shoot for!!

I am sorry to miss this reunion - a truly historic one. In reading what folks have been up to I am reminded of how interesting we are and am truly proud of all of our successes. I will be thinking of you.

Betty Gradwohl (Faust)

Marital status: Married
Children: 4
Occupation: teacher, mother, grandmother, semi-retired
Comment: I married my high school sweetheart and best friend, Richard Gradwohl while at WSU. We will be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary next year. I taught school a few years, stayed home and raised 4 boys, substituted, and enjoyed 10 years as a parapro in special education at Blue Ridge elementary in Walla Walla.  Dick was in the Army and spent time in Alaska, Hawaii, VietNam and in Georgia. We felt blessed to have him safely home from VietNam. The Army gave us an opportunity to travel and prepare for the life in retirement. We are a loving family with 4 wonderful sons who chose 4 wonderful wives and have given us 7 beautiful, energetic grandchildren. We love to share with them. I enjoy doing a little bit of everything, and serving when needed with my family and my church.

Golf & Winemaking

After high school, I attended Columbia Basin CC.  I returned home in 1961 and served four years in the Navy.  From the Navy I moved to Beaumont, Texas where I met my wife of 41 years, Mary Ann.  I moved back to Walla Walla in 1969 with my wife and my daughter, Connie, just in time for the first ten-year reunion.  I opened a State Farm Insurance Agency, retiring 30 years later.  I have two granddaughters.  Jessica is 17, and Lauren is 16.  Connie graduated from Wa-Hi, and both granddaughters are there now.  My two favorite pastimes are making wine and playing golf, both of which I enjoy to this day.

Barbara Greco (Stelzel)

Marital status: Married
Children: 3
Occupation: Exec. Dir. Community Outreach Initiative
Comment: After reading about the number of retirees we have in our class, I think you all must have managed your 401K's a lot better than I did!! I continue to work as executive director of a community program in Yakima, WA focusing on quality of life issues, improving education and economic development. Prior to that I was with our local PBS TV station for 20 years. Husband Ben is retired and works part-time as a Mariner host when Seattle has home games.

We've combined households with one of our daughters and her family--living with grandkids keeps us young and running--and a son-in-law who does the hard stuff we no longer can/want to do. Spare time is pretty tame: gardening, reading, crossword puzzles; love art, but am more dilettante than artist. Interests include: community activism, political campaigns--somebody else's, and at-risk, abandoned kids.

All in all . . . Life is good! We're blessed with three very career-oriented daughters who all found perfect husbands, and eight grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 13. If I could do anything over, it would be to value my classmates more and fast forward a generation to when women had more choices and opportunities.
