Marital status: Divorced
Occupation: Retired - UW Oceanography - now self-employed crafts business
Comment: Activities/Hobbies:  Fabric Crafts, Traveling, Garage Sales, Reading

After graduating from high school I went to college for one year in Ellensburg and then moved to Seattle. My first job was with Dun & Bradstreet. I soon discovered being a file clerk was not my idea of a career job. In 1961 I got a job at the University of Washington in the Department of Oceanography as an Office Assistant. After a few years and promotions I was the Administrative Assistant. I did payroll, personnel and all the travel arrangements and soon got the travel bug myself. Over the years, I travelled around the US, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Canary Islands, Mexico, Hawaii, etc. In 1982 I married a Boeing Engineer, Cliff Cotton, and soon thereafter he was transferred to Wichita, Kansas.

After 21 great years in Oceanography that part of my life was over. In Wichita I worked as an Administrative Assistant in an advertising agency. We were divorced in 1985 and I moved back to Seattle and worked as a travel agent. A year later in 1986 we got remarried and I moved back to Wichita. This time I did craft shows and we did a lot of travelling around the US and Europe. In 1988 I moved back to Seattle area and we divorced in early 1989. I continued to do art/craft shows and also had a part time job in an antique store in Edmonds for ten years. Then I worked part time in a quilt shop in Lynnwood until my sister Jan and I moved back to Walla Walla to care for our Mom in 2003. After three special years she passed away in June 2006.

I continue to do art/craft shows in the Seattle area, Tri Cities, Pendleton and the 4th of July in the Park in Walla Walla. In April I had the unpleasant task of having my dear 20½ year old black car, Abby, put to sleep. She came to me as a pregnant stray and stayed for 19½ years.

I volunteer at College Place CURVES twice a week and enjoy Mariners baseball. Life is good!

Glenn Garvie

Comment: Deceased

The now picture was actually taken in October of 1984.

From the October 6, 1989 issue of “Fire Scene”, the official newsletter of the Seattle Fire Department.

Glen William Garvie, July 29, 1940 to September 21, 1989, “You’ve Got A Friend”

Over three hundred Fire Fighters, family members, and friends gathered last week at Golden Gardens Park to pay final respects to a friend, father, and a co-worker.

Glen W. Garvie, Ladder 5/C, died September 21, 1989 from injuries he suffered in a fall from a tree while engaged in something that meant so much to him – his willingness to always be there to help others.

Glen, a 22-year veteran of the Seattle Fire Department, was born in Bashaw, Alberta, Canada on July 29, 1940. He was raised in Walla Walla before his family moved to the Seattle area. Glen lived in Edmonds and was the father of two daughters- Holly and Heather.

Glen entered the Department on January 30, 1967 and after Drill School was assigned to Engine 22. He worked most of his career on Engine 22 before requesting a transfer to Ladder 5 which was granted in April of 1985. Glen was a caring person who was well respected by all who came in contact with him. He was never one to make a big deal out of things, yet his career speaks of a man who was, indeed, a big deal.

On October 22, 1986, Glen received a Certificate of Meritorious Service and was awarded 120 merits for going beyond the call of duty to rescue an injured man who was topping a 60-foot fir tree when the top swung around and shattered the man’s left arm. This left the man in a state of shock and unable to descend to the ground. A 55-foot ladder was fully extended from the base of the tree, but the injured man was still 8-10 feet out of reach. Glen, showing total disregard for his personal safety, secured a rescue rope, a life belt, an extra length of rope, and climbed to the top of the nearly vertical ladder. Once at the top of the ladder, he talked the injured man down to the ladder, secured him, and walked him to the ground. At no time during the rescue did he hesitate, he knew exactly what had to be done and set about his task with craftsman-like efficiency.

This was only one episode in the life of Glen Garvie. His death was a shock to us all. However, we can learn from his passing, even if only that as Fire Fighters, we need to allow ourselves to become closer to the reality of death if we are to better understand the importance of life. Yes, Glen, you will truly be missed, but we will never forget you for you were a true and devoted friend.
