DeceasedDavid Russell EdwardsMarch 16, 1941 - February 11, 2020 David Russell Edwards was born on March 16,1941 and passed away in Tacoma, Washington, on February 11, 2020. The ripples of his life are broad and marked by love, purpose, and integrity. Dave was known for his generosity with time, expertise, spirit, and humor. Indeed, he called many of us to our higher purpose, to be our better selves. He made us believe that we had what it took, that we could make a difference. Dave loved open spaces, whether around the family cabin and wheat fields of Walla Walla, the wildness of Washington’s ocean coast, or the serenity of Puget Sound. Dave worked diligently, arrived early and did what was needed. He played with children, read poems that opened hearts, and sat in the front row in jazz concerts and theaters. He taught us that there is more to life than what you can see or do: it is the spirit and light you bring to something that creates connection. He was kind. We will miss Dave, and he is here with us. As he would have said about this life as he passed on: “This’ll Du”. Dave was born and raised in Walla Walla. He served in the Navy, had an M.B.A. from Stanford, and spent his career at Weyerhaeuser Company. He was a valued volunteer with many organizations that benefit to this day from his efforts. He leaves his wife, Pat Shuman, his daughters, Kelly and Brooke Edwards, and his son, Caleb Page. His brother Jock Edwards lives in Walla Walla with his wife Cora, and his sister, Jean Stewart resides in Spokane. He had five grandchildren and six nieces and nephews. Gifts may be made in his memory to Greentrike https://greentrike.org or Tacoma Community College https://www.tacomacc.edu Spouse: Pat Shuman Children: 2 Sons & 2 Daughters Grandchildren: 2 Grandsons and 1 Granddaughter Activities/Hobbies: Volunteer Work, Travel, Reading After high school graduation, I attended Stanford University where I graduated in 1963 with a BA in economics. I went to Navy officers Training in Newport, Rhode Island and to the Naval Supply Corps. School in Athens, Georgia. I was stationed for three years at the Supply Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. I left the Navy as a Lieutenant and got an MBA from Stanford in 1969. I joined Weyerhaeuser in 1969 at their headquarters in Tacoma where I worked for the next 30 years in various jobs in the Finance function. For the last ten years I was the Vice President and Treasurer. Since retiring in 1999, Pat and I have lived in Tacoma from which base we do a lot of traveling. After graduation from highschool, I married Bill Brunton and went to WSU to obtain a PHD in anthropology. This I completed in 1971 while teaching at Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota. We had three children, Kris, Erik and Heather who are all still living in this area with my beautiful grandchildren--3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. These blessed grandchildren are now in the process of graduation from highschool and beginning college themselves. How time flies. I taught at Moorhead State for 30 years and had a wonderful career with students and research. Upon retirement, I spent a year reading and then boredom set in. I decided I needed a project and that I would like to build a house. My husband, Vernon Engen was sweet enough to say, "go ahead." It was a great learning experience to do a whole house from scratch. It took 3 years and ended far bigger than the wee picture on the blueprint, but it is done and we are living in it. Despite a winter in the camper, and a summer in the garage, Vernon gets a lot of compliments from friends and neighbors so I guess it was worth it. Again boredom got to me though, so the next project was a trip to Europe. We bought a camper there and I stayed 6 months traveling around. It was wonderful and hard to come back. The children and grandchildren were the real impetus to return. Now as boredom is creeping up again, I think we will consider buying land in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and build a small home there for part of the year. But first, I have to wait for Obama to get my lost retirement back up to where it was!!! |
