Comment: 1960s: Graduated from Whitman College in '63 with a degree in Music.  Moved to Portland to work for a classical music radio station.  Met my wife, Suzi, whom I married in 1965.  I later adopted her two-year-old daughter Janet.  In 1966 we had twins (Kimberly and Matthew) and I joined the Farmers Insurance Group as a Commercial Underwriter.  I continued to work for Farmers for 32 years.

1970s: Moonlighted in radio for a few more years, but that ended with the first of four relocations in the '70s for promotions with Farmers:  Pocatello in 1971; Los Angeles in 1975; Colorado Springs in 1976; and back to Los Angeles in 1978.  We lived in Orange County both times I worked in Los Angeles and I had a 60 mile commute each way.  (I learned how to read in the car-pool without getting car-sick.)

1980s:  Selected for Farmers Executive Management Program in 1980 and later that year transferred to Santa Ana, CA, for last phase of this training.  In 1981 became a corporate officer of Farmers Group and Regional Manager of the Phoenix, AZ, Regional Office.  Seven summers in Phoenix made us long for the Northwest.  In 1987 moved back to Los Angeles to work as Vice President of Corporate Planning for Farmers.  We lived in Simi Valley, and the commute was only 33 miles.

1990s:  Held several other corporate officer positions as a Vice President with Farmers until taking early retirement in 1998 when we moved back to Oregon and settled on the coast at Lincoln City.  I also started a part-time job in Lincoln City working for the Bose Corporation at a Bose Factory Store.

2000s:  I continued to work for Bose for a little over 9 years, working three days a week even after the store was moved 75 miles to Woodburn in 2001.  (I missed that long commute, I guess...) I retired from Bose in 2007.  I also worked temporary part-time jobs for the Census Bureau in 2000, and again in 2008 and 2009 as early operations for the 2010 Census began.  I am presently fully retired.

We have six grandchildren, four in California where one of our daughters (Janet) still lives, and two in Oregon where Kimberly and her family moved a few years before I retired.  Our son (Matthew) was a submariner in the Navy for 6 years and was based in Charleston, SC, when he was discharged.  Suzi and I visited him and his wife there several times until they moved to Atlanta, and we visited them there, too, a few times.  (Visiting in the Southeast in the summer months really confirms why we wanted to live in Oregon!) Then, three years ago Matthew and his wife sold their house in Georgia and bicycled for five months and 6600 miles and settled in Portland.

The "NOW" picture is of me with my daughter Kimberly and her family at Disneyland in 2007.  (My wife Suzi took the picture.)

In high school, I had the world by the tail.  I thought I was smarter than everyone else so I dropped out.  Now how smart was that?  The one smart thing I actually did was to begin dating Deanna Schwarz in our sophomore year.  My stupidity began when I left Wa-Hi in my mid-junior year and got one of those low paying jobs.  After Dea graduated in 1960 (now she was smart) we married.  Dea and I had two sons.  Craig still lives in Walla Walla and currently is a mechanic at Little Goose Dam for the U.S. Corps of Engineers.  His wife Patty also works for the Corps. Wesley lives in Spokane.  Over the years I worked in numerous jobs; none with any serious future.  It was in the late 70’s, just before our oldest son graduated from Wa-Hi when true intelligence kicked in.  I went back to school.  I just had to get my high school diploma before Craig got his.  In 1978 I earned my High School Diploma.  The following year (as Craig graduated from Wa-Hi) I received an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Civil Engineering Technology from WWCC; boy was that cutting it close!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers subsequently hired me and I was employed by them until I retired.  I advanced in the ranks of the Corps’ Engineering Division and reached the senior engineering technician level.  By returning to school and getting my college degree, I was able to have a fantastic career with a future, including excellent benefits and opportunities.  In 1995 Deanna died of Lung Cancer.  After Dea’s death I transferred to the Construction Division and ultimately attained the senior level of Quality Assurance Representative.  Being assigned to other Corps construction facilities out-of-town helped me to work through the grief of Dea’s death.

A few years earlier I became interested in photography.  Later, during my Corps-related travels my interest in photography increased and I became involved with different photo groups.  At a photography convention in Spokane on 03-28-97, I met a lovely young photographer by the name of Lydia.  Even though she didn’t know it at that time, on the first day I saw her I knew I was going to marry her.  Three and a half years later (after turning me down six times) we finally married on 01-01-01.   We both retired on the same day 07-01-04 and our life together has been fun and full of photography ever since. We have traveled through the western United States, Canada and Mexico and have amassed a huge library of photographs.  We have entered our photographic images in local, regional, and international competitions and juried art shows and have won numerous awards. We have also produced our own private photo exhibitions and sell our works in a local art gallery, art shows and at the Washington State Fair.  In 2013, we expanded our business by co-leading photography workshops with Cannon Photographer of Light, Darrell Gulin and shortly thereafter began designing and fabricating fine jewelry.  We currently live in Enumclaw, WA and continue to enjoy retirement.  We have five grandchildren and seven great-grands.  Life is wonderful!  We look forward to seeing all of you at the 60-year class reunion.
