Sandy Rawls (Cline)

Comment:

Deceased

Walla Walla resident, Sandra Lee "Sandy" Rawls, 65, died peacefully at her home on April 19, 2006.

Sandy was born April 7, 1941, in Walla Walla, to Franklin "Doc" and Shirley Baker Cline.  She graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1959, and attended Willamette University, Central Washington University where she received a master's degree, and she received an Ed.D. from Washington State University.  On August 4, 1990, she and David Lewis Rawls married in Moses Lake, Washington.  The family moved to this area in July, 2002, from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Sandy was a generous, kind and gracious woman with a bright and beautiful smile for everyone.  She had indomitable amounts of grit and determination in fighting the disease of cancer that finally took her body but never her spirit.  She was a professional educator all her adult life, teacher, principal, superintendent.  Sandy was the best friend, partner and lover to her husband, a devoted daughter to her mother and father, and loving mother and grandmother to her children.  She embodied the wholeness and purpose of God's plan for her, living her life in Christian witness.  She enjoyed her horse, and loved sharing time in her flower gardens and home with friends.  She loved life and its relationship with people; always seeking to unlock the best in others.  Above all, Sandy was a tender, strong and devoted friend to many, many people.  She will be missed forever.

Sandy was an active member of Chapter FT, P.E.O., St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and the Walla Walla Country Club.  Professionally, she was a member of the Washington Association of School Administrators, American Association of University Women, and Phi Delta Kappa.  During high school she was selected as a Walla Walla Fair Princess Farmerette in 1959, and a former member of the Wagonettes Drill Team.

She is survived by her husband, David Lewis Rawls, at home; a step-daughter, Paula Kay of Eagle River, Alaska; a son, Todd DeGabriele of Lake Stevens, WA and step-son Justin W. Rawls of Bow, WA; her father, Franklin "Doc" Cline of Walla Walla; a brother, Chuck Cline of Port Orchard, WA; former husband, Robert DeGabriele of Bothell, WA; seven grandchildren: Alex, Gretchen, and Dylan DeGabriele, Emma and Audrey Rawls, Tia and Sara Kay.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Kay.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Cline.

Ann Ray

Marital status: Single
Occupation: Retired
Comment: Born in Springfield, Missouri, Aug. 26, 1941, my parents, brother (Scotty '58) and I moved to W.W. where I started school at Green Park.  We built a new home and I transferred to Sharpstein (6th Grade), then Pioneer, Garrison, and Wa-Hi.  Several people have asked why "no senior picture" -- married in June was told I couldn't return without a physical -- so I enrolled in night school (2 yrs), taught by my "favorite" teacher/principal (Pete Hanson)!  Through the years I continued my schooling, working after my four children were through school.  We tranferred around the NW with Standard Oil/Chevron for over 27 years.  My husband, Duane Castoldi, being "Italian" so I am related by marriage to quite a few of our classmates (Lucarelli, Zaro, etc.)

I worked (federal service for 13 years) with Bureau of Land Management , Bonneville Power, and Corps of Engineers.  After moving back to W.W. in 1989, was re-introduced by "Bro" Gary Buttice to Buford Barritt, who was a retired Navy Chief/Submarine Service and on PT boats in Vietnam.

We moved to the Blue Mountains (Kooskooskie) and rebuilt/remodeled three cabins.  Our camping/motorcycling was put on hold for over 6 years to care for both our parents.  We felt fortunate to have them next door and close by.

In the Photo Album section I've included five photos of our cabins and family.  One of my favorite photos is of Buford and "Lucky", a 2 day old baby fawn.  That summer we had over 900 children/adults, some even weekly.  I entered two pictures in the S.E. Washington Fair taken by Elaine Logan and Judie Davis, both of which won ribbon (one blue, one white).

In 14 years we have raised a "MaMa" Squirrel and lots of fish in our pond not to mention raccoons, a Golden Eagle family, quail, a variety of birds, bats, and a few possums.

Buford and I combined have 4 children, each with 3 girls and 1 boy.

Buford's children are Terry (CA), Bron (CA), Nora (TX), and Caprica (SC).  Mine are Mike (OR), Lisa (Afghanistan/temporarily), Leslie (WA), and Lori (WA).

I have spent the last two winters, besides missing Buford, doing my "Dick Tracy" (as Capt. Fred Moore calls me) searching for our '59 classmates.  After over 40 years, have really enjoyed finding/visiting with our classmates and WAIT till you view all the memorabilia many of you have graciously shared with our classmates.  Seven cases not counting all the clothes, i.e. gym outfits, cheerleading, formals, letterman jackets, band uniforms, graduation robes, etc.

In closing, I would like to wish all '59 Classmates the "BEST" of good health, lots of happiness, and a great life over the next 50 years!

Marital status: Married

Occupation: retired
Comment: After graduation, I went to CBC for one year, came home that next summer and joined "The Gems" band. We played our music around the Northwest and Canada for five years. We have recently reunited our band this year, to the delight of ourselves and our "60 some year young" fans, this year and have plans to perform again, sometime in the future.

In 1963, I married Marian Haken, class of 1961. We have two sons and five grandchildren.

When the Gems band broke up in 1965, I went to work for Pay Less Drug and just retired two years ago, after 42 years with Pay Less and Rite Aid.  The first 18 years was in advertising and the remainder in management, store manager.

Now that I'm retired from that, I'm able to pursue my art career full time.  I have a web sight; jamesreidartist.com.

I first started painting seriously in 1973 and am now a full time artist, living in Boise, Idaho.
